The Service Source CD contains the following documents and folders:
- System Stuff (folder)
- Service Source Startup (document)
- Service Source Files (folder)
- Disk Images (folder)
- Viewer (folder)
- Q-stack (folder)
System Stuff contains the Apple QuickTime™ extension file, the Apple CD-ROM driver, and 32-bit Color Quickdraw. Depending upon your system configuration, you may want to copy these documents to your System Folder (see "Installing QuickTime" below).
Service Source Startup and Service Source Files contain everything required to operate Service Source. To launch Service Source from the CD, open the Service Source Startup document. (Also see "Copying Service Source to Your Hard Drive" below.)
Disk Images contains a compressed version of HyperCard 2.1. If you do not have HyperCard 2.0 or later, decompress and copy this program to your hard disk. For complete instructions, see "Installing HyperCard 2.1" below.
Viewer contains Inside MacViewer, a utility program used to display archived and international-only service information (see "Inside MacViewer" below).
Q-stack contains a HyperCard stack that you can use to send technical questions to the Apple Technical Assistance Center. Q-stack is also described below.
Installing QuickTime
Service Source contains QuickTime video movies and line-art animations. QuickTime requires a color-capable Macintosh (any 68020 or greater Macintosh); the application does not run on the Macintosh Plus, SE, Classic, or Portable. Most of the video movies on this CD-ROM look best in 256 Grays/Colors display modes.
To install QuickTime, drag the QuickTime extension in the System Stuff folder on the CD-ROM into your startup System Folder and restart your machine.
If you're using QuickTime with an Apple CD-ROM drive, you should also replace your existing driver with the Apple CD-ROM driver from the System Stuff folder. This driver is an improved-performance version of the driver for the AppleCD SC and AppleCD SC+ drives.
Copying Service Source to Your Hard Drive
Service Source requires 40 MB of disk space; Service Source plus Inside MacViewer (see "Inside MacViewer" below) requires 55 MB.
To copy Service Source to a hard drive, select the Service Source Startup document and the Service Source folder and drag both onto the hard drive. The Service Source folder and Startup file must remain in the same directory on your hard drive.
Installing HyperCard 2.1
1. Open the Disk Images folder.
2. Launch HyperCard 2.1.dart. DART™ (Disk Archive and Retrieval Tool) is a utility for creating new master disks.
3. Click the Format Disk checkbox, insert a blank, double-sided disk into a floppy drive, and click Start. DART formats the destination disk, and then decompresses and writes the data from the source disk to the destination disk.
4. When the copy is done, choose Quit from the File menu.
5. Copy HyperCard and the Home stack from the floppy disk to your hard drive.
Inside MacViewer
Inside MacViewer is included on the CD-ROM to allow access to the following archived products and international-only information:
• Take Apart and Adjustments chapters for the ImageWriter II, ImageWriter LQ, and LaserWriter/LaserWriter Plus
• All information for the international Portrait Display monitor
International information for the PowerBook 100 and 140/145/170 is located in the product stacks in Service Source. Complete instructions for using Inside MacViewer are in the Viewer folder.
Q-stack
Q-stack is a tool designed to assist you in sending questions and issues to the Apple Technical Assistance Center (TAC) via AppleLink or fax. Questions sent via AppleLink from Q-stack receive first priority over non Q-stack questions; questions sent via fax must be generated from Q-stack.
Feel free to copy Q-stack to your hard drive. Use Q-stack to communicate to the TAC for issues that are very specific, require little additional dialog between parties, require research, and do not require an immediate response. Complete instructions for using Q-stack are in the Q-stack folder.
